The First Place Settled in Madison County
New Market was the first area settled in Madison County, with the Criner family arriving near the Mountain Fork of the Flint River as early as 1804; George Smith built the first log house and mercantile business in 1814, and a gristmill and sawmill followed in 1819. Once known as 'The Watercress Capital of the World,' it has never incorporated and its historic downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places.
